Early Return To Work Program

What is an Early Return To Work Program?

  • An early return to work program is designed to get employees who have be out of work due to injury or illness to come back to work sooner by giving them modified or alternate tasks to complete while they regain their full pre-injury capacity (aka "Light Duty").

What are the benefits of an Early Return to Work Program?

  • Profits increase because injured employees recover faster (25 days average), employees remain productive, workplace relationships are maintained, and workers' compensation premiums are reduced over time.
  • NOTE: If an employer is able to limit a work comp insurance claim to "medical only" (no indemnity), the claim's impact on the employers work comp experience modification factor will be reduced by 70%, which will result is significant insurance premium savings.  Contact Minnesota Risk Partners for a complimentary work comp claims analysis to determine your Minimum Experience Modification Factor, your Controllable Experience Modification Factor and how much your currently overpaying on your workers' compensation insurance.

Can I pay an employee who is on light duty less than their pre-injury wage?

  •  Yes, in Minnesota, if an employee is unable to complete their normal duties and they are placed on some form of transitional work (aka light duty), the employer can pay the injured employee 2/3rds of their normal pre-injury wage.  For more information please visit the Minnesota Dept of Labor and Industry website,  https://www.dli.mn.gov/business/workers-compensation/work-comp-disability-benefits-temporary-partial-disability-tpd .
